POSTED: January 05 2011

The sun shined brightly over the hundreds of protesters and citizen activists that gathered on the steps of the Capitol today.  They, among a myriad of other progressive, environmental and conservation groups from around the state, were there to send a very strong message to their State Senators, Governor Heineman and Attorney General John Bruning: "YOU, AS STATE ELECTED OFFICIALS, HAVE A ROLE IN PROTECTING OUR LAND, WATER, WILDLIFE AND HOMES FROM THE VERY RISKY TRANSCANADA PIPELINES."

Following a brief statement from Bold Nebraska Executive Director Jane Kleeb about the dangers these pipelines pose to the fragile Sandhills and Ogallala Aquifer, a resident farmer and member of the Nebraska Farmer's Union Wyane Frost spoke, and the event concluded with a heartfelt address by long-time Nebraska resident and famed author, Mary Pipher.

The message, be it written on home-made cardboard signs, demonstrated by the giant make-shift fake oil spill on the Capitol steps, or from the mouths of activists and speakers, was clear:

While the federal government is responsible for granting or denying a permit to TransCanada to build a second pipeline across our state, this time crossing the fragile ecosystem of the Sandhills and the precious Ogallala Aquifer, you have a role in other key areas.

As state elected officials, you have a role in:
•    Siting and routing of pipelines
•    Eminent domain process and terms
•    Easement abandonment of unused/out of service pipe
•    Emergency response planning
•    Liability for spills
•    Regulation of neighboring land uses

Following the event, volunteers were asked to take plush toy meadowlarks with an attached USB drive that contains 16 documents in opposition to the proposed pipeline to each of the Nebraska's State Senators.  If you would like to have access to any or all of these documents, please email us at cbrenner@nlcv.org.
